ClickFix: The Scam That Asks You to “Fix” the Problem Yourself

You know those little “I’m not a robot” checks we all click without thinking?

Cybercriminals noticed.

ClickFix is a scam that uses fake verification pages, fake error messages, or fake “security checks” to trick people into doing the dangerous part themselves.

It may look like a normal CAPTCHA. It may say your browser needs to be verified. It may claim something is broken and give you simple steps to fix it.

That is the trap.

The scam is not just asking you to click a button. It may tell you to open a command window, paste something, and press Enter.

That is where things can go sideways fast.

One Important Question

If a website tells you to open Run, Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt and paste in a command, do you know exactly what that command does?

If the answer is “no,” “not really,” or “the website seemed pretty confident,” stop right there.

That is a great time to call Computer Corner.

How ClickFix Works

ClickFix scams usually start with something that feels familiar:

A fake CAPTCHA
A fake browser check
A fake error message
A fake document access page
A fake “verification required” notice

Then the page gives instructions that may sound official or harmless.

It might say something like:

Press Windows + R
Press Ctrl + V
Press Enter

Or it may ask you to open Terminal or another system tool and paste in a command.

Here is the problem: that copied command may not be a fix at all. It may be instructions that download malware, steal information, or give attackers a way into your system.

In other words, the website says, “Here, fix this.”

But what it really means is, “Please install our problem for us.”

Rude.

How to Protect Yourself

A few good habits can help:

Keep your computer updated.
Use trusted malware and virus protection.
Be cautious with pop-ups and fake browser warnings.
Never paste commands from a random website.
Ask for help when something feels off.
Trust your gut when a page seems pushy, weird, or overly urgent.

Secure VIP Can Help

Our Secure VIP plans are designed to give personal computer users stronger everyday protection and a local team to contact when something does not seem right.

Scams like ClickFix are exactly why that matters.

You do not have to become a cybersecurity expert. You just need to know when to pause, when to ask questions, and who to call when your computer needs help.

There Is Always a Better Way Forward

ClickFix is sneaky because it tries to make you part of the attack. If a website asks you to open Run, Terminal, PowerShell, or Command Prompt, that is your signal to stop and get help.

At Computer Corner, we help make technology easier to understand, secure, and support. If something feels strange, suspicious, or just a little too “click here and trust us,” give us a call.

You know what technology should do. We help make it happen.
